We are rhythmical beings living in a rhythmical universe.Coming soon-new improved training!

Thanks to the numerous enquiries about our training we will be making an announcement soon!

Rhythm is a fundamental aspect of our very existence.
It is a manifestation of our being in this life.
The universe contains many rhythmical systems on a continuum from sub atomic particles through to the movement of the stars.
All these rhythmical systems are interlinked and interdependent.
That polyrhythmic interdependence leads to a need for us to serve other in order to preserve existence.
In order to do this we need to relate to our rhythmic nature and develop an awareness of its place amongst other rhythms and its significance amongst other aspects of our being.
When we lose touch with our rhythmicity we malfunction – such malfunction can contribute to destructive living --we fall ill, make war, create oppression. Our living becomes anti-living.
When malfunction takes place we need healers (in different situations and at different times such healers may be called, therapists, or helpers)   to help us get back in touch with ourselves.
We know that the most successful healing takes place through right relating – that all effective healers (whatever their title and job description) show certain qualities in common in their relating to other.
We know what the characteristics of right relating are. We know these things from many ancient teachings and from the evidence of modern day research.
We can train ourselves and others in right relating and we can choose to serve other. When we serve other we serve the life force.
We can train ourselves and help others toward rhythmic awareness.
With rhythmic awareness and right relating we can serve other
Serving other is the highest state of being. We are all interdependent.
If we could bring about rhythmic awareness, right relating and a willingness to serve in everyone we could change the world
In order to bring about this change we must start with ourselves –look at who we are, what we are doing and why we are doing it
Then we develop our awareness of and concern for other
Other must go beyond all barriers and must include all systems. We cannot be limited to one species, to one time or place
We need first to make right relationship with ourselves. Then with other people and with all the organisms that share our planet, with the substance of the universe and with the very life force itself.

In August 2000, after ten years of wondering what his symptoms meant Barry Wakefield was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He was told that drumming might help him. Having been a drummer in his youth he took no second bidding and acquired a drum. Subsequently he found that there was work being done which suggested beneficial effects beyond Parkinson’s. This led to a period of reflection and research. Barry ran several short workshops in this preparatory stage and integrated the use of drumming into his training work with counsellors. There were several brief courses available, mostly in the USA and mostly condition specific but surprisingly no substantial award bearing training.
Therapeutic Drumming Foundation
In 2006 the TDF ran its first Diploma and has continued to develop high quality training.
The work of the foundation is based on three R’s, rhythm, relationship and reflexivity.
The notion that rhythm is an essential element in our lives and that it can be used  beneficially and therapeutically.
That the therapeutic and beneficial effects are enhanced through the forming of effective relationships, and that such relationships are best formed by practitioners who have developed their work through a process of reflexivity.
Trainees have come to the foundation from a variety of backgrounds. Some have taken new career paths and others have brought new insights to existing roles. Graduates of the programme are applying their learning in diverse settings
Training in Therapeutic Drumming
The TDF offers a programme of professional training in therapeutic drumming. This is a substantial part time course usually taken over 2 to 3 years and requiring 144 hours attendance plus practical work and personal study. Progress is assessed through coursework and certificated at stages along the way.
As well as the in-house programme we are also able to deliver the training to teams in their own organisational setting.
Personal and Professional Development.
We offer a number of courses and workshops in this field and can tailor provision to your requirements
