FREE SEMINAR

May 5, 2009

Friday 22nd May 2009
This is a FREE SEMINAR
There has been a growing interest in the various therapeutic uses of drumming over the past few years. This seminar is designed to bring together interested parties from a variety of backgrounds. We are particularly interested in informing colleagues in the health service as well as those with social care and educational roles of the work being done in this field. We know of a range of professionals already using drumming and rhythm work for therapeutic benefit and their fields cover a wide range and include mental health, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, counselling, psychotherapy, social care, problems of aging, behavioural difficulties, neurological problems. Please come along and please circulate this message to anyone who might be interested.
We would like to bring together everyone interested in the benefits of drumming at all levels of experience.

Barry Wakefield
In August 2000, after ten years of wondering what his symptoms meant Barry Wakefield was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He was told by his first consultant to go and find out how to cope. In his searching he found an obscure source suggesting that drumming might help. Having been a drummer in his youth he took no second bidding and acquired a drum. Subsequently he discovered that there was work being done which suggested there might be beneficial effects beyond Parindpn’z. This led to a period of reflection and research. Barry ran several short workshops in this preparatory stage and integrated the use of drumming into his training work with counsellors. There were several brief courses available, mostly in the USA and mostly condition specific but surprisingly no substantial award bearing training.
Therapeutic Drumming Foundation
In 2006 the TDF ran its first Diploma and has continued to develop high quality training.
The work of the foundation is based on three R’s, rhythm, relationship and reflexivity.
The notion that rhythm is an essential element in our lives and that it can be used beneficially and therapeutically.
That the therapeutic and beneficial effects are enhanced through the forming of effective relationships, and that such relationships are best formed by practitioners who have developed their work through a process of reflexivity.
Trainees have come to the foundation from a variety of backgrounds and this variety is reflected in the routes taken after the training.. some have taken new career paths and others have brought new insights to existing roles. Graduates of the programme are applying their learning in diverse settings
