Skiffle and Drumming

June 8, 2009

Now I am out of the office from tomorrow for two weeks – with no internet or mobile access --but there are a couple of things I would like to draw to your attention before I go –
First off there is the event which we are putting on here at the TDF in Nottingham soon after I get back – this is really two events in one day –
An illustrated lecture in the morning and a drum circle in the afternoon
It would be good to know in advance if you are coming – but it is OK to just turn up on the day
Sunday July 5th 11am- 1pm
Skiffle Story –
TWO HOURS OF SERIOUS FUN
It will cost £5 but you get to stay for the drumcircle in the afternoon FREE!!!!

This here’s a story about a kind of music where every other song started with the words “this here’s a story about..”
What does skiffle mean to you – well this is about REAL skiffle – not a bout some college boys playing jokey tunes in a jug band--- not about good old redneck boys singin’ them patriotic songs – not even about those comedy numbers like my old mans a dustman
We are talking here about real skiffle
A peculiarly British phenomenon
A medium thru which the Brits re imported their own culture after sending it abroad for a few hundred years – only to send it out again six years later.
Without skiffle there would have been no British beat boom of the sixties – no Mersey sound – no stones – no yard birds – no cream – no led zeppelin – no rock and pop music as we know it – no Adam Faith- no Clapton – no Hendrix -- on the other hand – no Cliff Richard – mmmm!!
Skiffle gave rise to new ways of hearing music and new ways of presenting it – it influenced the major artists of the 60s and therefore of the rest of the century – it encouraged participation – it was a precursor of punk and of the drum circle movement ---- it has been misrepresented – it was egalitarian -- it was all inclusive and multi cultural – it was a peculiarly British phenomenon but it was paradoxically --- world music. Come and hear the tunes – learn about the pioneers – join in.
