New Training in Detail

The Therapeutic Drumming Foundation Training in 2010-2011
Practitioner qualification and continuing professional development

The New TDF Diploma in the theory and practice of therapeutic drumming and rhythm work.
A programme of nine modules organised in three groups. Each group entails attendance at an intensive workshop lasting from Friday afternoon to the following Tuesday.
The nine modules are essential for those wishing to progress to a diploma. The content of the modules is of a practical and experiential nature with a minimum of didactic input. In order to gain a diploma a good deal of theoretical understanding will be required and this will be gained through individual study including guided reading outside of the modules.

Group One: The field guide to therapeutic drumming
The modules in this group give a comprehensive introduction to Therapeutic Drumming and an overview of current theory and practice. Each of the modules will examine the connections between various aspects of the theory and will place an emphasis on one specific area.

Module One: The therapeutic benefits of drumming and rhythm work
We know that drumming has beneficial effects. Module one looks at the range of those effects and the available evidence.

Module Two:  Drumming as communication in therapy.
Module two examines the nature of a beneficial or therapeutic relationship and how it can be applied using drumming as a means of communication.

Module Three: Developing Practitioner reflexivity through drumming
In order to facilitate positive outcomes for others a high level of self awareness is required of the practitioner. This module looks at ways in which that requirement can be met.

Group Two: Theory and practice
The modules in this group examine theory in detail and look at how it can be applied in practice.

Module Four: The foundation theory of therapeutic drumming.
Module four entails a comprehensive examination of all aspects of the theory.

Module Five: Effective group work
Module five uses the theory to build model of effective group work.

Module Six: Applications of the foundation theory of therapeutic drumming.
Module six looks at the wide range of work being done in the world of therapeutic drumming

Group Three: Personal Development
The modules in this group give opportunities to experience directly the beneficial effects of drumming. They also demonstrate modes of practice which can be applied to a wide variety of settings

Module Seven:  Drumming as Interpersonal Process
Module seven is structured in such a way that specific interpersonal skills can be practiced and evaluated

Module Eight:  Drumming in Guided Exploration
Module eight consists of a framework of activities through which individuals can increase self awareness

Module Nine: Drumming in Facilitated Development Group Work
Module nine consists of open process group work facilitated to enable participants to encounter others through communicative drumming

Notes
  1. These modules can be taken as free standing Continuing Professional Development CPD

  1. The award of a diploma is dependent upon attendance at all nine modules over a period not exceeding 3 years and the submission of the required work of an adequate standard

  1. Certificates of attendance will be available for all modules

  1. The 9 modules can be taken over one two or three years if working toward the qualification and over an indefinite period otherwise

  1. The diploma will be regarded as a practitioner qualification

  1. An advanced diploma will be available by dissertation

  1. There will be provision made for the accreditation of prior learning

  1. There will be systems put in place for students part way through the old programme to transfer in
It is strongly recommended that learners keep a journal throughout their period of study. .In any learning process- especially one which is experiential- it is easy to let the progress you make go unnoticed simply because there is a tendency to forget our starting point and our stops along the way when we are focussing on “now”. More advice on journalling will be made available

Requirements for award of diploma
The diploma will be awarded to students who meet the following requirements
  1. Attendance at all nine modules during a period not exceeding 36 months. A further 12 months can be taken to complete the other requirements. Attendance implies full and active participation in the modules.

This is intensive practical training taking place within a limited timeframe. Students should ensure that they are able to attend for  the full time-table.

Accreditation of prior learning by training or experience.
Many students come to us having already worked in this field and most have found it beneficial to follow the complete programme. We recognise however that some people may wish to have their prior learning recognised and set against some of the course requirements. Any student wishing to do this should discuss it with us. For any part of the course to be by passed the student would need to present substantive evidence that they had already achieved the learning available in that part. There would of course be a fee to pay for the evidence to be evaluated and the collection of evidence can sometimes be as time consuming as doing the course.
Transferring in from the previous courses
If you have done any of the training in our previous programme you can make use of it to work toward this qualification.
To gain the new diploma you would need to complete the required assessed work – and this might be by updating what you have already done.
In terms of attendance the following would apply

You have already completed….
You would need to add…
The old introductory course
8 modules
The old certificate
5 modules

An advanced diploma.
There will be opportunities for students who complete the diploma to go on to an advanced qualification by dissertation.
In very exceptional circumstances – it might be possible for some students who attend the full programme to be admitted directly to the advanced qualification

Trainee trainers
We are looking to increase the number of people available to deliver this training. You are welcome to identify yourself to us as a potential trainer at any stage during your training. We would normally expect you to complete your own training and then work alongside experienced members of the team for a number of sessions before becoming certificated.
